We received a very tongue-in-cheek “seasonal greeting” from one of our clients today. To paraphrase, it spoke about the notion that the holidays are essentially based in religion, but the desire (or fear) to stay within the boundaries of political correctness stipulates that one must decentralize the greeting to the tune of “seasons greetings” or “happy holidays”. While there is nothing wrong with these generic greetings, I don’t see an issue with simply saying “Merry Christmas”. This is, after all, why we have the holiday and what the season actually is.
I take no offense when someone wishes me a merry one, nor do I feel dirty returning the favour. So here’s to Santa, bank holidays, Coca-Cola, cheesy snowflake animations on websites, and the exchange of commercial goods; and whatever else the season means to you.
Long live Merry Christmas.
