Top 5 tips to promote your e-newsletter

by Robin Eldred, Apis Design

Electronic newsletters are the new marketing gold mines of today. In actuality, they're not really that new – but their effectiveness has been growing steadily over the past few years. As a result, companies that offer newsletters are very interested in growing their subscriber list. A larger subscriber list will translate to better word of mouth, better brand recognition, and more sales leads.

The following are the top 5 methods to promote your e-newsletter and grow your subscriber list.

1. Network

If you're out there at your networking meeting, be sure to ask people you meet if you can sign them up for your newsletter. You have a chance to sell them on the features of your newsletter, so if you're offering a quality mailing most people would be happy to say yes. You may also want to consider adding a sign-up message and web address to your business cards.

2. Direct Mail

Many local trade organizations will be happy to part with their member lists (perhaps a small fee may be required), and sending out a direct mail campaign to these members introducing yourself and encouraging them to sign-up for your free, informative newsletter.

3. Quality Content

This is the most obvious and most important one. No matter how well you promote your newsletter, if it lacks quality information that is interesting and compelling, then people will walk away. Offer tips, advice, resources, whatever – and be sure to save the sales pitch for your other marketing efforts.

4. Shameless Promotion

Just like your website, you should shamelessly promote your newsletter. It's a great way to get people interested in your products and/or services without having to commit to anything, so is probably your most likely initial ‘sale'. So place prominent links on your home page, within your email signature, on your business cards, on the final slide of your presentations, etc.

5. Website Giveaways

If you have a great little ebook or free guide on your website, asking people to sign-up for your newsletter when they go to download your guide is a no-brainer. People are about to download the guide because they're curious, so it stands to reason that they may be interested in your newsletter as well (assuming it features similar content).
